The Cost of Beep-Beep and Ring-Ring in Walton County

Recently a WMBB-TV report from its "Perk Patrol" examined the cost of cell phone telephone service in Bay County and the surrounding counties in the Panhandle.

It appears that the data for Walton County was restricted to "cell phone" usage and did not include the "touch-to-talk" services provided by SouthernLinc and Nextel to Walton County. The WCTA requested the account details for SouthernLinc wireless, Nextel wireless, and Alltel wireless from the Clerk of Courts office and discovered the tab for all "wireless phone" charges for 2006 are:

SouthernLinc "Beep-Beep" in Walton Co. was $151,249.47

Nextel "Beep-Beep" totaled $809.33

"Ring-Ring" with Alltel Cellular totaled $78,940.13

Total for all wireless service - $230,998.33*

That's a lot of "Beep-Beep"

and

"Ring-Ring"

*These totals include both airtime and equipment purchases during the 2006 fiscal year.
